- 1/2 cup salted butter, softened
- 4 cups confectioners sugar
- 2 tbsp milk
- 1 tsp peppermint extract
- 1/8 tsp vanilla extract
- red gel food coloring
Instructions
- In a large bowl, beat butter with a hand mixer until light and creamy, about 1 – 2 minutes.
- With mixer on low, slowly add the confectioners sugar.
- Mix in milk, peppermint extract and vanilla extract. Consistency should be like modeling clay.
- Cut dough in half, set aside one half and wrap in clear wrap so it doesn’t dry out.
- Add red food coloring to the other half, kneading the color into the dough until the desired shade of red is achieved. (I used gloves so my hands wouldn’t turn red).
- Divide each half into 4 pieces, this just makes it easier to work with.
- Roll a white and red piece into a long log and then braid them together. Trying to combine the colors without squishing them together too much.
- Using a sharp knife or pastry cutter, cut the blended logs into 1/2 inch pieces.
- Lay candies on parchment lined sheet pans.
- Continue rolling, braiding and cutting remaining dough.
- Let sit uncovered for 24 hours to dry, then place in candy dishes or containers.
- Enjoy!
