There is nothing better than Homemade Meat Sauce and a big bowl of pasta for dinner! Making sauce is so much easier than you think, and so much better than the jarred sauce!
Honestly, Homemade Meat Sauce is really easy to make and only takes a few simple steps to get started!
Using a large pot with a lid or a dutch oven, heat the olive oil and minced garlic over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef, breaking apart as you cook it until it’s browned. I use lean ground beef, if you use a meat with a higher fat percentage you may have to drain but try not to drain out all the flavor from the olive oil and garlic!
Once the beef is cooked, reduce the heat a bit and carefully add in the tomato sauce and tomato paste. I say carefully because the sauce tends to splatter when you add it to the hot pan. Even better if you can shield yourself with the lid to the pot!
Stir the sauce and paste for a bit, breaking up the paste. Bringing the sauce back to a low boil. Add in the spices and the sugar. Yes, sugar, but just a pinch! Use fresh spices if you have them, they make great sauce! I tend to mix dried and fresh depending on what I have around the house.
Bring the everything to a low boil, and reduce to a simmer and cover with the lid slightly popped up. Let simmer for about 30 minutes so all the spices incorporate. Sometimes I make the sauce early and remove it from the heat and let it sit with the lid on until I am ready to use, then turn the heat back on before tossing it with pasta.
Making homemade sauce isn’t very hard to do, but I do suggest tasting as you go to make sure you can taste all the spices. If not, add a little bit more.
Enjoy!!
