How To Make Homemade Tortillas

I have outlined making Homemade Tortillas with a stand mixer and a dough hook but this dough can just as easily be prepped by hand. It doesn’t require any kneading or rise time.

Let’s get started, add all the ingredients to a mixing bowl. If using a stand mixer, attach dough hook and turn on low for about 5 minutes until combined. If you aren’t using a mixer, stir ingredients together until smooth and combined. Note, this dough doesn’t have to be perfect.

Place the dough on a floured surface. I would say lightly floured but you may need to add a little here and there to prevent sticking to your surface or rolling pin.

Cut the dough into 16 pieces, again, this doesn’t have to be perfect. I try to get them as close as possible to the same size.

Now, take each one and roll very thin with a rolling pin. When I say thin, I mean you can almost see through the dough. So, I roll as a I go here. Since the dough is thin you really can’t just set it aside. So, I cook as a roll.

Heat a skillet or a griddle to medium heat. Tortillas only cook about 1 minute per side. While they are cooking roll out the next tortilla. This process moves pretty fast.

Cook about 1 minute and flip, cook another minute and remove to a plate. These are best served warm but you can wrap them in aluminum foil for later or let cool and place in a resealable bag. If you live in Florida like me, you may want to refrigerate to prevent them from getting moldy due to the humidity.

Hope you enjoy!
